Winterval 2023: 5 Magical Ways to Enjoy Christmas in Waterford

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and in Waterford, we always go all out for Christmas. We’re delighted to see the return of Winterval to the city this year and the programme is as exciting as ever!

Winterval will run from the 17th November to 23rd Dec with most of the action happening from Friday to Sunday each week. It’s a celebration of all things Christmas with markets, light shows, theatre and so much more to look forward to.

1. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN WATERFORD

You’ll find local makers selling toys, decorations, cosmetics, perfumes, candles, gifts and so much more. It’s the perfect place to start, or finish, your Santa shopping.

2. WATERFORD ON ICE

One of the most exciting activities of Winterval is ice skating and Waterford on Ice does not disappoint. The exciting ice rink returns to the City’s quayside from November 17th to January 2024 and is sure to be the hottest ticket for the coolest event. They bring the magic of the North Pole to Waterford with a spectacle of lights and the opportunity for young and old to practice their skills.

The rink is real ice and fully covered so suitable for all weathers, just wrap up warm! Penguin skating aids along with trained ice marshals and helpful skating staff will ensure that the whole family have fun. 3. A NARNIA CHRISTMAS

Winterval, in an exclusive collaboration with Broken Theatre, presents ‘A Narnia Christmas’ a wonderful adaptation of the C.S Lewis classic. Step through the Winterval wardrove and be transported to a spectacle of light and colour. It’s a ground-breaking one-hour show with thrilling fire and aerial and acrobatic performances that are sure to stay with you long after you’ve departed for the real world.

The show takes place on Jenkins Lane, weekends during Winterval and every day of Christmas week. Pre-booking is essential, and tickets start at €12 for children. You can book tickets on their website now.

4. GERBOLA’S CHRISTMAS CIRCUS

Proving our reputation as the biggest festive celebration in Ireland, even the circus comes to Waterford for Winterval!  Gerbola’s Christmas Circus is back in Waterford for Winterval weekends during Winterval and every day of Christmas week. Step out of the cold and into the warm big top and enjoy a festive performance that is sure to excite and amaze the whole family.

The show will feature all your favourite Circus acts including the breathtaking Globe of Steel, heart-stopping high wire, hilarious clowns, mesmerizing acrobats and much more. Book tickets soon to avoid disappointment.

5. WINTERVAL MAIN STAGE

Winterval is so much more than just a Christmas market, it’s a whole event. We’re looking forward to the lineup of the main stage which is in full swing for 21 days before Christmas.

We’re expecting to see a selection of brilliant, local, and international talent in music, performance, dance, theatre and art. Highlights include performances from choirs, fun children’s Christmas discos, shadow puppetry shows by Ben Hennessey, and an array of live musicians.
